Is salt healthy?

180 Nutrition is salt healthyBy Guy Lawrence

Salt. Public enemy No.1 along with fat. And just like fat I have come to the conclusion it’s actually essential for the body, but just like fat there’s salt I will not touch and then there’s salt I ensure I have daily. So is salt healthy? Depends… and here’s my thoughts… Continue reading

The good, the fat & the ugly: The top 5 fats I eat daily

good fatsBy Guy Lawrence

Eat your good fats. How often do you hear that? The fear of fat is certainly changing, but how often does someone say I can’t eat that as it contains too much fat! I think the fat free consumer is still very much here but things are slowly changing.

The purpose of this post is to help with the confusion around fat. What is good fat and which fats are just plain ugly. I’ve found over time I generally have certain fats in my daily diet and there are a whole host that I do my best to avoid. I don’t worry about the calories, I only worry about the type of fats. I wrote a post here if you want to delve into fats more. And why is there a fat 1970′s cowboy dancing? Not sure but we liked the picture!  Continue reading

Why I do not drink soy lattes…

soy_latteBy Guy Lawrence

Do you hang out in cafes? We do! Do you drink soy lattes? Mmm, we don’t.

This post was inspired by a conversation I had recently in a cafe (of course …) so let me paint a quick picture for you.

The one thing I’m finding as 180 Nutrition continues to grow is that Stu & myself seem to be involved in more meetings. This is actually a compliment and we are always looking at different ways to make them fun and worthwhile.

Our usual criteria is:

  • funky cafe
  • great staff
  • stones throw away from the ocean

Just last week we had the NSW Police S.W.A.T team sitting next to us in a cafe. One of them approached us and it turned out that he uses our 180 protein supplement and also trains CrossFit. We hung out with them for 20min talking everything from CrossFit to diet and gave them bar samples and a t-shirt… relevant? No… Seriously cool? Oh yeah!

I try and stick to one coffee a day and anything after that I reach for the tea – but never the soy.

Turning up at these meetings, I can’t help but notice what different people order. Now I’m a live and let live kind of guy, as I certainly don’t like to judge. But it doesn’t take long before I get asked questions on health and nutrition, it simply comes with the territory.

During a recent conversation, I happened to mention that I ate 1 – 2 avocados a day as I have them in my 180 smoothies. The person I was meeting seemed quite shocked and their instant reaction was ‘what about the fat?’ They felt counting calories and a low fat diet was the way forward. This was said whilst they sipped on their soy lattes with honey (you can read my thoughts on honey & fructose here).

Without wanting to sound like a tool, my reaction was simple. I said I would rather eat half a dozen avocados a day than drink that soy latte. Naturally I had to explain myself, and here are my thoughts on why I don’t drink it… Continue reading

Are diet sodas a healthy choice?

Diet Soda Health Risks

By Guy Lawrence

“They may be free of calories but not of consequences.” - Professor Helen Hazuda speaking on diet soda.

After knocking the wind out of my mates sails regarding his healthy fruit salad and apple juice (click here if you’ve no idea what I’m on about), the next topic that came up on the radar was his diet soft drink. You see, the next logical step for my friend to take whilst on his weight loss plan was to be drinking the ‘diet’ stuff instead of  ’normal’ stuff.

I mean, if a soft drink has the word ‘diet’, ‘sugar free’ or ‘low cal’ etc… It’s got to be healthy for you right?

His new found enthusiasim for his health and weight loss plan had already taken a dent regarding fruit and sugar, so I understood the switch to sugar free soft drinks. After he finished guzzling down his cold can on a sunny day I said one word to him… Aspartame.

In a nutshell, this was my response…

I am on a weight loss plan, should I eat fruit?

Fruit and weight lossBy Guy Lawrence

One fine Saturday morning in the Coogee Tropicana Cafe after a very enjoyable ocean swim…

Friend: May I get the muesli fruit salad and a freshly squeezed apple juice please…

Me: Uh?? What happened to the big brekkie and long black you always order?

Friend: This is the new me mate… I need to drop a few kilos so I’m on a health kick!

I order an omlette and congratulate him on his new found enthusiasm for his health kick and weight loss plan. At this point I have two options:

A) I could sound like a food nazi and tell him my thoughts on what he just ordered… or B) Keep my mouth shut and wish him the best of luck.

I choose the latter… the last thing I wanted to do was dampen his spirits with my thoughts with weight loss and fruit, so I thought I’d put into a blog post instead and mail it to him… Continue reading

Not another protein powder review!

By Guy Lawrence

I must admit, I often raise an eyebrow now and then when looking at what some companies are saying about their ‘top’ protein powders. After typing the words ‘protein powder review’ into Google to see what would come up, I thought I would make my own contribution to the oracle (Google) and come up with my own ‘protein powder review’ page. So take a look at these short short film clips from the movie – Bigger, Stronger, Faster.

I also recently wrote a post – 5 things to consider before buying a protein supplement featuring another film clip from that movie on how to make your own supplement in under a day. If you haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it as it is an extremely well put together film covering the Sport/Health industry in America. Continue reading

The swingers came to town: The Sydney Girevoy kettlebell competition

kettlebellsBy Guy Lawrence

The first time I heard the word kettlebell, I had visions of an alarm ringing when the water boiled! It was safe to say I had not quite hit the mark with this initial thought. And if you are unfamiliar to what the kettlebell is, just think of a cannon ball with a handle that gets hurled around a room at great intensity by an individual without letting go of the thing (as that could cause some problems)! Continue reading
