Does food influence our thoughts?

180 Nutrition Month of the BrainBy Guy Lawrence

Everything you have ever experienced, felt, or conducted in life is due to brain function…. It is impossible for a person to become healthy mentally or physiologically without a healthy brain.Datis Kharrazin DHSc, DC, MS, MNeuroSci

Month of the brainAfter kicking off the new year with the month of the gut, A.K.A the second brain, we thought we’d move north and check out the most powerful computing system there is; The Human Brain.

Even though there is a known common distinction between mind and body, I view things a little differently. We already know that having a healthy heart or liver is a direct result of the foods we eat, and the lifestyle choices we make, so why would the brain be any different? After all it’s all housed under the same roof, and that to me simply means it’s still part of the same thing.

Then the burning questions for me are: Continue reading

Why I do not drink soy lattes…

soy_latteBy Guy Lawrence

Do you hang out in cafes? We do! Do you drink soy lattes? Mmm, we don’t.

This post was inspired by a conversation I had recently in a cafe (of course …) so let me paint a quick picture for you.

The one thing I’m finding as 180 Nutrition continues to grow is that Stu & myself seem to be involved in more meetings. This is actually a compliment and we are always looking at different ways to make them fun and worthwhile.

Our usual criteria is:

  • funky cafe
  • great staff
  • stones throw away from the ocean

Just last week we had the NSW Police S.W.A.T team sitting next to us in a cafe. One of them approached us and it turned out that he uses our 180 protein supplement and also trains CrossFit. We hung out with them for 20min talking everything from CrossFit to diet and gave them bar samples and a t-shirt… relevant? No… Seriously cool? Oh yeah!

I try and stick to one coffee a day and anything after that I reach for the tea – but never the soy.

Turning up at these meetings, I can’t help but notice what different people order. Now I’m a live and let live kind of guy, as I certainly don’t like to judge. But it doesn’t take long before I get asked questions on health and nutrition, it simply comes with the territory.

During a recent conversation, I happened to mention that I ate 1 – 2 avocados a day as I have them in my 180 smoothies. The person I was meeting seemed quite shocked and their instant reaction was ‘what about the fat?’ They felt counting calories and a low fat diet was the way forward. This was said whilst they sipped on their soy lattes with honey (you can read my thoughts on honey & fructose here).

Without wanting to sound like a tool, my reaction was simple. I said I would rather eat half a dozen avocados a day than drink that soy latte. Naturally I had to explain myself, and here are my thoughts on why I don’t drink it… Continue reading

Expert, public speaking & food: It’s all part of the process

By Guy Lawrence

Just the other day somebody pointed out to me that if you can stand up and talk for more than 15 minutes on any one topic, you’re an ‘expert’.

I figured anyone with a motor mouth and a bit of gusto would then fall into this category, depending on how you distinguish ‘expert’. The first image that pops in my mind is one of a tailor cut suit and immaculate white teeth, enough qualifications to create a small novel along with the ability to solve a rubik’s cube in under 60 seconds… Yep, an ‘expert’.

There’s been many a time when I was convinced by the razzle dazzle, gloss and shine of something only to discover what’s underneath a little disappointing. A bit like unwrapping your main present at Christmas to unveil a rocking horse instead of that BMX bike you were hoping for. Continue reading

The best protein powders in Australia?

Muscle manBy Guy Lawrence.

I was at the annual Fitness & Health Expo in Sydney recently, and the first thing that stood out to me was the amount of protein powders competing with each other claiming to be the best protein powders in Australia.

What was even more fascinating was the amount of money these companies were spending to try and out compete each other.

Make no doubt about it, the protein powder industry is big business here in Australia.

The Sydney Morning Herald wrote a great article on the event saying -

“If Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was still alive he’d be wondering if he got into the right industry, because in 2011, protein shakes, powder and bars are quite the money earner, not to mention totally legal.

Everybody wants protein, but do people know why we even need protein? The quick science of why your muscles need protein is because during a training session, muscle fibres tear under stressful loads, or weights. Protein fixes those tears, which allows the muscle to repair and build.”

But the first question I feel one should ask themselves is, not which one is the best protein powder, but do these heavily hyped and marketed protein powders actually work?

The fitness industry seems to tout oversized chiseled muscles and deeply tanned skin.

Whatever happened to health?

The SMH goes onto say – “So be careful when asking that mega-man that resembles a kyphotic Marvel comic villain about protein requirements…he may have used something a bit naughtier than protein to get that look.

Regardless of my sentiments, the industry will continue to grow as people covet bulging biceps and perfectly toned abs shown on glossy pages next to the 2.5kgs tubs of protein powder.

Just do a little bit of research to understand what your body needs, and what chemicals you are putting into it. And remember, a glass of milk, a chicken breast sandwich, and Tassie salmon on veggies still work just fine.”

So if you are wondering which is the best protein powder in Australia to buy, do your research and think twice before you make a purchase.

This is the very reason why 180 Natural Protein SuperFood was created. Being able to improve your health and nutrition from a real food resource at your convenience.

High-fibre diet ‘cuts heart disease risk’

Scientists have found that a high-fibre diet could be a critical heart-healthy lifestyle change young and middle-aged adults can make.

The study from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine found adults between 20 and 59 years old with the highest fibre intake had a significantly lower estimated lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease compared to those with the lowest fibre intake.

For the study, Hongyan Ning, lead author and a statistical analyst in the department of preventive medicine at Feinberg, examined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally representative sample of about 11,000 adults.

Ning considered diet, blood pressure, total cholesterol, smoking status and history of diabetes in survey participants and then used a formula to predict lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease.

“The results are pretty amazing. Younger (20 to 39 years) and middle-aged (40 to 59 years) adults with the highest fibre intake, compared to those with the lowest fibre intake, showed a statistically significant lower lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease,” said Ning.

However, in adults 60 to 79 years, dietary fibre intake was not significantly associated with a reduction in lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease.

It’s possible that the beneficial effect of dietary fibre may require a long period of time to achieve, and older adults may have already developed significant risk for heart disease before starting a high-fibre diet, according to Ning.

As for young and middle-aged adults, now is the time to start making fibre a big part of your daily diet, said Ning.
